Tracing the formation of massive spheroids from high-z galaxy clustering

چکیده

The high-z progenitors of local massive early-type galaxies should be characterized by a strong level of clustering, larger than that measured for z = 3 Lyman Break Galaxies and comparable to that of z ∼ 1 EROs. First possible evidences for such strongly clustered objects at z > ∼ 2 were found by the FIRES and K20 surveys, that have identified new classes of faint high-z K-selected galaxies. Some details are given here for the new population of massive star-forming galaxies at z ∼ 2, found by the K20 survey in the GOODS-South area. Because of their much redder UV continuum, most of these galaxies would not be selected by the Lyman Break criterion. Such objects are good candidates for the precursors of local ellipticals caught in their formation phase. We have calibrated a two color criterion to allow the identification of these highest redshift galaxies in bright K-limited samples.

Origin of Bimodality in Galaxy Properties: Cold and Hot Flows, Clustering and Feedback

We address the origin of the robust bi-modality observed in galaxy properties about a characteristic stellar mass ∼ 3× 10M⊙. Less massive galaxies tend to be ungrouped blue star-forming disks, with properties correlated along a “fundamental line". More massive galaxies are typically grouped red old-star spheroids on a “fundamental plane" and hosting AGNs. M/L is at a minimum near the critical m...

Evolution of the Hubble Sequence in Hierarchical Models for Galaxy Formation

We present a model for the broad morphological distinction between the disk and spheroidal components of galaxies. Elaborating on the hierarchical clustering scheme of galaxy formation proposed by Cole et al, we assume that galaxies form stars quiescently in a disk until they are disrupted into a spheroidal configuration by mergers. Bulges and spheroids may continue to accrete gas from their ho...

Quasar Elemental Abundances and Host Galaxy Evolution

High redshift quasars mark the locations where massive galaxies are rapidly being assembled and forming stars. There is growing evidence that quasar environments are metal-rich out to redshifts of at least five. The gas-phase metallicities are typically solar to several times solar, based on independent analyses of quasar broad emission lines and intrinsic narrow absorption lines. These results...

Observational tests of the evolution of spheroidal galaxies

Granato et al. (2004a) have elaborated a physically grounded model exploiting the mutual feedback between star-forming spheroidal galaxies and the active nuclei growing in their cores to overcome, in the framework of the hierarchical clustering scenario for galaxy formation, one of the main challenges facing such scenario, i.e. the fact that massive spheroidal galaxies appear to have formed muc...
